AGF Quilt Block Collection Blog Tour

AGF Quilt Block Collection Blog Tour

You all know how much I love Art Gallery Fabrics, right? Well, of course I do, I'm one of their designers but I loved them even before I was designing for them. They are leaders in the industry for sewing inspiration, fabric quality, and fresh, modern prints. Their website and blog is stocked full of free projects, giveaways, and ideas for your next sewing adventure.

For some time now AGF has been building a quilt block library for you with Youtube demonstration videos for making each block. Art Gallery Fabrics has asked Sharon McConnell of Color Girl Quilts to host a AGF Quilt Block Collection Blog Tour so you can get even more ideas on how to sew with all these fun traditional quilt blocks. I jumped on the chance to be part of the tour and today is my turn to show you what I made.

I knew right away I wanted to make a table runner from the Aztec block. This block makes me think of pine boughs and perfect for all the pretty Art Gallery Fabrics I have in spruce, mint, teal, silver, and wintery-white mixes.

BG0A3114 cropped.jpg

To make a runner like mine you will need:

  • Six 10'' square light prints

  • Six 10'' square dark/medium prints

  • (1) 20'' x 60" rectangle backing and batting

  • (4) 2-1/4'' x 42'' strips for binding

I mixed my own AFG prints with fabrics designed by other AGF designers for the perfect winter-greens look. Here's a list of the Art Gallery Fabrics collections these prints came from:

Bountiful prints by me Sharon Holland (me)

Coastline print by Sharon Holland

Bachelorette Fusions with prints by Sharon Holland and Pat Bravo

Floralia Fusions with prints by Sharon Holland and Bari J.

Woodland Fusions print by Maureen Cracknell

Spices Fusions print by Bonnie Christine

BG0A3152.JPG

I always like a physical print out when I'm working with a new pattern. You can download the free Aztec block here. The AGF instructions are well illustrated and easy to follow. I did jot down a few notes for myself when I was making this block and I'd like to share those tips with you.

First off, I made you a downloadable coloring page for this runner. It's three Aztec blocks sewn short sides together to make a runner that finishes around 15'' x 54'' in size. If you'd like a longer runner, then simply add more blocks. The reason I suggest working out your fabric placement before you begin has to do with the sub cutting and the direction of the points. Click on the coloring page image (below) for the download to pop-up.

When you first are sewing your half-square triangle (HST) units, use a short stitch length to keep your pieces from unraveling after sub cutting the strips. Be sure to use an accurate seam allowance and square your HSTs to 9-1/2".

Audition Before SUB Cutting

Aztec Runner Cutting.jpg

My original idea for fabric placement ended up changing once my sections for the blocks were all assembled but for this tip you can see how I reference my colored page before I made the sub cut strips. Notice I kept my HST seams running the same direction (like in the AGF instructions) BUT the light and dark placement of the HST have been flipped in my cutting so the points are correctly oriented when I put the blocks together. My suggestion is to have your coloring page by you and flip the HST before cutting to see if everything matches up with your colored page. When you're ready to sub cut, cut the strips into 2-3/8'' segments.

BG0A3143.JPG

Pairs of A/B sections ready to assemble into blocks. After I had my block sections sewn I played with the placement and decided to make my blocks so the green prints meet in the center of the block.

BG0A3260.jpg

Now here's a runner perfect to leave out all winter long. Dress it up with sparkling silver and metallic accents or create a snowy lodge-look with rustic elements. The quarter inch straight-line machine quilting accentuates the needle-like quilt block pattern and was a fast way to finish this table topper.

BG0A3265.jpg

What AGF quilt block would you make from their quilt block collection? I hope you've been inspired by the tour makes and if you have, Art Gallery Fabrics wants to see your blocks and block inspired projects and they have an Instagram contest to help celebrate all your quilty creations!

Here's how to enter:

-Sew up a block from the AGF Quilt Block Collection with AGF fabrics

-Share them on your public Instagram account using the #agfquiltblockcollection hashtag

-Every month AGF will be choosing two lucky winners who will receive a fat quarter bundle of AGF fabric featured in the AGF Quilt Block Collection!!!!!!

Bountiful Holiday Tour Week 2 Recap

Bountiful Holiday Tour Week 2 Recap

Bountiful Week 2.jpg

It's been a fun packed second week on the Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour and an honor to have these talented designers working with my prints. I hope you're getting lots of sewing ideas for the upcoming holiday season!?!?

Let's get right into the recap, starting with Blair Stocker of Wise Craft Handmade on Monday. I'm in love with everything Blair does because her sense of pattern play and quilt style speak to my soul. I have both of her beautiful books, Wise Craft and Wise Craft Quilts and want to make every project in them! Blair used her stand alone Stepping Stones quilt pattern and made a mini quilt with Bountiful fabrics. I love the shadow play of lights and darks and how this design can take on different looks the longer you explore it. Read more about Blair's Bountiful make and more about her on her blog.

On Tuesday, the incredibly talented Silvia Sutters of A Stranger View blew all of us away with her Weave quilt of select Bountiful prints and Art Gallery Fabrics coordinating Pure Element solids. Here's another designer that I admire and love everything she stitches. Silvia tells you exactly how she made this quilt in her tour blog post which you must visit just to see all the beautiful photos she took of this quilt--wow. I'm also crazy for the quilting Silvia did on this quilt!

Kitchen Set and photo by Peta Peace / She Quilts A Lot

This beautiful kitchen set trio was designed and made by Peta Peace of She Quilts A Lot. Peta is a highly accomplished and talented designer who also has her own book A Piece of Cake that's absolutely delicious with great quilty projects. Peta's kitchen set project is so lovely in her limited palette of Bountiful prints. Don't you adore the fussy cut farm scene on the towel--perfection! Best thing is Peta has made a free PDF download pattern for this project! If you could bare to part with the set it sure would be a wonderful hostess gift for holiday party going. Read more about this on Peta's Bountiful blog post.

I couldn't let everyone have all the fun so I took a day on this blog tour to share a new free pattern. Thursday I blogged about my Gather Round placemats. This project is a free PDF download and they go together really quick. The hexagon shape looks great on any size table and the instructions are given for making 6 placemats. Read more about this project on my post and see how they are also reversible!

Friday ended our second week of the tour with Heather Andrus of Quilt Story. Heather stitched with Bountiful Vine Umbra print knit dress for her youngest girl. I adore this color on her and wouldn't this dress be perfect nearly year round? AGF knits are thick and buttery soft and good for all sorts of sewing besides garments. I still want to try making a knit quilt one of these days with simple squares. Read more about Heather's make and how flirty fun this dress is on her adorable girl--I love it!

Gather Round - Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour

Gather Round - Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour

BG0A2964.JPG

Today's my stop on the Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour and I'm excited to share the new Gather Round free pattern with you!

Bountiful Holiday Graphic RGB.jpg

Every year, Thanksgiving comes around and I wish I'd thought ahead to organized a holiday sewing blog tour. Well, this year I was on the ball and planned way ahead. In fact, this tour has been in the making since my spring Bountiful tour! Some of the makers on that spring tour are also taking part in our holiday tour with the addition of some new bloggers as well. It's been a spectacular tour so far and I love the variety of projects geared toward gift giving, decorating your home for the holidays, or fast and fun sewing projects for any time of the year.

BG0A2519.JPG

For my tour post and new free project, I selected Bountiful prints from both the Plant and Harvest color ways that create a winter Christmas feeling. For this project you will need fat quarters of 4 light and 4 dark prints, 1-1/2 yards backing, and (6) 18'' squares of Hobbs Thermore batting (affiliate link). The full material list with fabric sku numbers are listed on the PDF instructions.

I used 8 different prints in my placemats and mixed and matched for 6 different combination placemats. If you'd prefer a more unified look to your mats simply reduce the number of fabrics and up the yardage on each print so the total yardage is still the same. For example: To make 6 placemats you will need a total of 1 yard light print and 1 yard dark print. The backing and batting remain the same for 6 mats.

Download my free Gather Round pattern from my Free Patterns page. You'll find 24 free patterns there which are also great gift ideas for everyone on your sewing list.

BG0A3034.JPG

I must confess that the last few years I've not decorated for Christmas--life has just been too busy. The extent of my decorating is displaying the Christmas cards I receive from friends and family and switching out the quilted table runner from my fall runner to a more wintery looking runner. For me, I prefer to spend my time with my kids and cooking.

BG0A2948.JPG

When I was thinking up what sort of project I wanted to share with you for my tour I wanted to make sure it would do not only double-duty for me, but for you as well. By making placemats, not only did I get a new look for my holiday table this year but we all get to enjoy a very useful (and quilty) project.

I like a round placemat because you can fit a lot of people around a table and not have mats edges overlapping. My Gather Round mat isn't round but is such a fun shape without messing with curves. Simple half-square triangles (HSTs) and a pillow case turned edge make these really fast to put together. I used a wonderful product from Hobbs Batting for the batting. It's called Thermore (affiliate link) and is perfect for placemats in many ways. The ultra-thin polyester fiber is not bulky at the seams and dishes won't rock or wobble. Because I turned the layers rather than bound the edges, it was nice not to have extra bulk at the seam and there's no need to clip the corners on this project when using this batting. Quilting can be 6-8 inches apart and the batting will still hold up in the laundry. It's very easy to quilt through by machine or by hand. This product would be great for T-shirt quilts, bags, clothing, and of course quilts like baby quilts that get a lot of use and laundering.

BG0A2996.JPG

I decide to use my Perennial Renewal print from my Bountiful fabrics for the backing on all 6 mats. Now my placemats have a whole new (second) table setting option. I love how my vintage dishes look in this clean farmhouse table setting. I'm going to get a lot of use out of these next month!

BG0A3067.JPG

I chose to do minimal quilting on my mats. My top thread is the beautiful Aurifil 2887 green in a 28-weight thread so it really shows up on the front of the mat. I used a 50-weight 2021 white Aurifil thread in my bobbin to give the top stitch a little more definition between stitches and the white thread will blend in with the backing for a cleaner finished, whole-cloth look to the back of the mats.

BG0A2974.JPG

I had a lot of fun photographing these mats and now have a strong desire to do some holiday decorating!

BG0A2984.JPG

I can't wait till my kids get home for the holidays and we can gather around our table (which is getting too small these days for the growing family) and share laughs, food, and time together.

BG0A3046.JPG

Thank you for visiting my blog and all the love and support you've shown me (and my fabrics) this past year. I hope you're enjoying the Bountiful Holiday Blog Tour and pay visit to all the talented designers that have already shared their projects and the rest that will follow me. Peta Peace of She Quilts A Lot shared a fabulous free pattern yesterday to make a beautiful kitchen towel, mitt, and hot pad set that would be so difficult to give away so plan on making two sets! Friday Heather Andrus of Quilt Story will be hosting the tour and she's stitched up a must make for a little girl on your holiday sewing list.

Here's a sneak peek at my fabric pull for the new free pattern I'll post about on the 9th. I've mixed Bountiful fabric prints from the Plant and Harvest colorways to curate a frosty winter looking palette. When I was designing this collection I really viewed the Harvest colorway as something that would be perfect for winter sewing with out being a traditional Christmas look. This is more of a country winter look in my mind and I can't wait to share my new project with you. More about the specific print sku and names on my tour post next week.

I hope you enjoy the tour as much as I will! Tomorrow visit that wild and crazy Mathew Boudreaux to see what he's stitched up for my tour. You'll find him at his blog Mister Domestic. I love that guy and he really should be called Master Domestic because he has mad skill and can sew anything! But, what I really love about Mathew is he also has incredible teaching skills and can teach anyone to sew--and sew well.
