Kismet Look Book

Every aspect of fabric design is exciting but some parts more so than others. I needed to learn to be patient along with how to pull together a beautiful collection. Concept to production can take upwards of a year sometimes so much thought and planning goes into predicting trends and colors that will work for the season the collection finally lands in a shop owners hands at your local fabric store or favorite online shop. All that hard work and waiting pays off when Art Gallery Fabrics releases a new fabric line and collection Look Book!

The Art Gallery Fabrics Kismet Look Book is a virtual publication you can view right on your computer or device—for free. Click HERE to view.

I’ve been secret sewing projects for the Kismet Look Book along with other talented makers. Each contributor makes and photographs their projects and Art Gallery Fabrics puts it altogether into a beautiful virtual publication.

For this blog post I’ll only be showing the four projects I made for the Kismet Look Book plus a quilt made from my Vista quilt pattern. You’ll most definitely want to take some time and pour over the Look Book pages to see all the other amazing contributions by your favorite online makers—this post is just a teaser!

Trapeze Quilt

The first and biggest of my project makes is a full-size Trapeze quilt in Kismet and Pure Solids. When I first designed this quilt earlier this fall I had designed it with Kismet in mind but the fabrics had not arrived yet for me to make a sample so I made the beautiful Sky version in blues for the pattern launch last month. I had Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabrics quilt this for me and we selected my favorite panto called, Abstract Butterflies. The batting is Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton batting inside for a traditional drape and feel. This quilt pattern is one of my favorite makes this year and the Kismet version has now been put in use on my bed.

With Kismet fabrics selling out so fast in shops we made it real easy for you to shop this look! Lady Belle Fabrics has the Trapeze Kismet Quilt Kit available in her shop. Don’t delay on getting your hands on one of these kits!

Charming One

With every fabric collection I like to have at least one free pattern to add to my Free Projects page. We are sent fabric strike offs from the mill before we get the final rolls of fabric. Strike offs are small pieces of fabric that Art Gallery Fabrics evaluates for color and quality before giving final approval on a collection. The designers are sent these pieces so we can get an early glimpse of the prints and hopefully create something to get ahead of the mad dash of sewing right before the Look Book releases.

I had a handful of scraps that I didn’t want to waste and decided to create a very simple, yet fun scrappy One-Patch quilt. In all my years of sewing I’m not even sure I’ve done a One-Patch quilt before!

To extend the little I had left of prints I included many shade of coordinating Pure Solids, AGF Decostitch Blenders, and AGF Smooth Denim. There were only four squares of the Mudcloth Berries print from Kismet so I decided to make them a feature in the center of the quilt.

To make it a little more special I put everything on the diagonal and kept the quilting very, very simple and stitched in the ditch. If you’re an absolute beginner at quilting or just want to use up some scraps—this is a fun and rewarding quilt to make!

I used Hobbs Heirloom 100% Cotton batting inside this quilt as well and love the traditional feel of it. Sometimes the simple quilts are the best and sure show off the prints beautifully! I made the pattern layer cake friendly that you can get 4 squares per 10” precut. Download the free pattern HERE.

Pillow Shams

Not only do I love making things but I also love photographing them! Once all my Kismet projects were completed I had a couple days of photography, To set up the lovely Charming One quilt bed scene I wanted pillows with Kismet fabric so why not make my own pillow shams! I used the wonderful YouTube tutorial video by Craft Gemini to learn how to make these easy and picture-perfect shams. These are going to go right into use now as well and pillows and pillowcases are the perfect way to freshen up any room.

Three of my pattern testers made their own Charming One quilts. I love how each makers personality shines through from their scrap basket fabric pulls. Be sure to visit these talent makers via the highlighted links.

I’m crazy over this honey and mint Charming One quilt make by Kathleen Armstrong of Creative Stitches by Kathleen. Kathleen used a variety of Art Gallery Fabric prints and blenders from several AGF designers but I spy many Bonnie Christine prints as well as some I’ve designed for AGF. Charming One quilt make by Joyce Ulm

Even though Halloween has come and gone, Joyce Ulm of @evamaecustomquilts, Etsy shop, and on her Facebook blog HERE is still loving the Art Gallery Fabrics Sweet and Spooky collection and I don’t blame her one bit! Just look at how amazing these prints and AGF blender are in a simple One-Patch design like this quilt—stunning and so much fun! I’m excited to see how Joyce ends up quilting this one and if you are too, be sure to follower her on any of the above social platforms via the links.

Charming One quilt make by Lindsey Fuessley

I’d love to see the rest of Lindsey Fuessley’s scrap basket if these were just some of the fabrics she pulled from it to make this gorgeous Charming One top. Some of my favorite colors and you can’t go wrong mixing prints between Art Gallery Fabrics collections. Lindsey is a relatively new quilter and wanted to quilt this 57-1/2’’ square quilt herself. I suggested she do the stitch in the ditch like I did if she wasn’t feeling all that confident. I’ll be watching her feed to see how (and what) she decides to do. Folded Star Hot Pad

The free Folded Star Hot Pad pattern on my FREE PROJECTS page has been newly updated so if you’ve downloaded it before, you may want to try the new and improved version!

Folded Star Hot Pad by Sharon Holland

The pattern change was purely out of necessity. Remember me talking about limited fabrics to work with in making projects ahead of time? Well, I didn’t have enough materials to make the original square hot pad version so I ended up clipping the corners for this new octagon shape. Necessity is the mother of all invention and I’m very pleased I had to improvise!

The three dimensional stars are made by folding squares of fabric and taking them in place. The finished piece is a tactile experience but also makes the coolest hot pad for hot dishes and a great gift idea!

The possibilities are endless for fabric arrangements. I extended my available Kismet prints by adding rounds of AGF Pure Solids which also popped the graphic star shape even more.

Dresden Pouf

Because the prints in Kismet have a worldly, traveled look I wanted to make something extra fun for home decor and found this Dresden Pouf pattern by Amy Barickman for Indygo Junction.

This large pouf was a very fast and fun make and the instructions easy to follow. The pattern also comes with instructions to make a Dresden pillow and already on my to-make list.

I ended up only using prints for the top of the pouf to save on the prints I had but again, love the results because all the attention is right where I want it—on the pretty prints! For the sides of the pouf I used AGF Smooth Denim. For the Dresden center circle and bottom I used AGF Textured Denim just to add more of that global feel. A few lines of chunky hand stitching also gives the pouf some additional details and character.

Vista Quilt

Nuria Elkins of Fabric Stork made a Kismet version of my Vista quilt for the Kismet Look Book and I’m over the moon in love with what she created!

Nuria is an Etsy fabric shop owner and one of the sweetest persons you’ll meet. I love working with her and collaborated on quilt kits and giveaways from her shop in the past. When we started talking about her doing Vista in Kismet for the Look Book we both were on the same page for the type of boho vibe we wanted to see this quilt pictured in—I think she nailed it!

Right now, Nuria is waiting for a shipment of Kismet fabrics to arrive before she can put together the Vista quilt kits in Kismet and Pure Solids like you see here. You’ll want to stalk her shop to know when the kits are ready because they’re certain to sell out fast. Sweet Home Quilt Along - Week 1

Welcome to the first week of the Sweet Home Quilt along hosted by (me) Sharon Holland, Maureen Cracknell, and Jennifer Jones. Not only are we excited to be working together to bring you this quilt along, but we’re so happy that you’ll be sewing along with us and have this chance to connect!

Many of you have joined Maureen and I for past sew alongs and you’ve already an idea of our hosting style and what to expect during the next six weeks. For those of you that have never sewn along with us I’ll let you know what to expect so you can pace your sewing with us.

Our events are very casual. No sign up, but we encourage you to follow all the hosts because each host will bring their unique perspective to the sewing table and we’re all working with different Art Gallery Fabrics and collections so each of our quilts will looks completely different. Be sure to check out their blog post each week as well as follow along on Instagram!

Each quilt along week will begin with a Wednesday blog post (on each hosts’ site). See the schedule above to know what to expect each week and how we’ve broken this quilt down into manageable goals. By the end of six weeks you’ll have your top done and hopefully quilted, too!

The Friday right after the Wednesday blog post there’ll be a corresponding sponsored giveaway! We’ve coordinated with six fabulous sponsors who’ve donated prizes you’ll love to add to your stash, notions, materials, and equipment in your sewing room.

Be following along on Instagram as all the giveaways will be held on that platform and winners will be randomly drawn on Monday from the #SweetHomeQAL hashtag pool. If you haven’t already purchased the Sweet Home quilt pattern you’ll need to get it from my SHOP in the form of a PDF download or you can purchase it from Fat Quarter Shop as a PDF as well. Once you have your pattern it’s time to pick out your fabrics!

Week 1 - Fabric Selection

Selecting your fabrics can be a simple as digging through your stash and pulling out your favorite prints! You may already have an idea in mind for what you’d like your little neighborhood of houses to look like or have a special recipient in minds and are using their favorite colors.

When I first published this quilt pattern in May I made two quilts, one for my granddaughter and another for her baby brother. They share a room so it was fun to make quilts that fit their unique personalities but still worked together in the same space.

I finished each quilt with 5/8’’-wide Chenille-It Blooming Bias for the cherry on top of an already adorable quilt. You’ll find instructions for adding faux chenille binding to your quilt in the pattern as well as a video tutorial on my Tutorial page. But, we’ll get more into adding binding on Week 5 for finishing your quilt. Just something to think about if you want to order your materials early. You can also finish your quilt with traditional binding—it’s nice to have options!

All these quilts show you finished Sweet Home quilt examples made with beautiful Art Gallery Fabrics. I hope this little Sweet Home quilt show has helped to inspire and get your fabric selecting ideas flowing.

For the quilt along, I’ll be making a third Sweet Home quilt using Art Gallery Fabrics new Terra Kotta collection mixed with a couple Pure Solids and one print from my Spirited collection. This kit is available at Fat Quarter Shop if you’d like to sew a quilt like mine.

Hello friends. I’m back with more Sweet Home quilt news as well as a brief review of my personal growth since my last post.

National events such as COVID-19, George Floyd’s wrongful death, the Black Lives Matter movement, and educating myself on the injustices to Black rights in this country have been upper most on my mind these last few weeks. You can follow my day-to-day journey of discovery and learning on these issues along with my regular quilt, fabric, and artwork posts in my Instagram feed @sharonhollanddesigns so I won’t get into any of that here and reserve this space for what you signed up for—quilting and sewing.

This week I added over 100 new fabric masks to my Fabric Masks shop page and will be adding additional masks over the next couple weeks because I’ll be donating 50% off all my masks sales sold from June 7 through July 7, 2020 to the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. Because equity and justice is part of the mission of UWGC I’ve chosen this organization close to home to contribute to on a local level.

Along with 50% of mask sales durning this one month period, I’m donating 100% of my PDF pattern sales as well to the United Way of Greater Cincinnati as well. If you’ve been eye-balling some patterns, this is a great time to make a purchase!

How perfect is that binding!!??? It’s so good! The print used for the binding is a diagonal stripe by Amy Sinibaldi so it gives a bias look from regular WOF (width of fabric) binding strip cuts—brilliant!

Nuria has already made a sample quilt from her kit and here’s the full view of this adorable neighborhood—I love it and it makes me smile just looking at this photo! This quilt design inspires new meaning for me with every quilt I see made!

Heart Quilt Sew Along

Heart Quilt Sew Along

I know, I know that just two posts back on January 8th I said that Maureen Cracknell and I had no plans for a sew along, but, turns out that I was wrong about that (insert laugh/cry emoji)!!!!

You know how it is when you see pretty fabrics and the perfect quilt block—you just have to stop everything and make a quilt with it, right?!?!?! That’s what happened with Maureen and I when we both received happy mail from Art Gallery Fabrics with the new Foresta and Ballerina Fusions. Our boxes both arrived on Saturday and by Sunday we were making plans to host a Heart Quilt Sew Along using Allison Harris’s Heart block pattern. It all happened that fast and so will this sew along as we plan to start and finish our quilts and sew along by Valentine’s Day.

Heart Block Zip Pouch by Maureen Cracknell

Prior to this last weekend, Maureen was stitching zip pouches using Allison Harris’s of Cluck Cluck Sew Heart Block tutorial to make heart blocks that she then turned into Mirrored Hearts zippered pouches for her Etsy shop. She loved making the hearts so much she’d told me she’d love to make a quilt from the hearts next.

Like I said, as soon as the new fabrics came in, now we both wanted to make heart quilts!

Allison’s Heart Block tutorial has a free download for her heart block with size options and a quilt layout for a 6’’ square block. You’ll also find suggestions for how to customize this block into other projects.

For this sew along we have Allison’s permission to use her block and we’ve selected and designed a quilt using an 8” square block, sashing, and border layout to make a 52’’ x 61’’ throw-size quilt. You’ll find a free download for our quilt layout, coloring sheet, and fabric requirements on the Sew Along page.

We’ve not included piecing instructions in our free download because the Heart Block tutorial at Cluck Cluck Sew will cover what you’ll need to know about making the heart blocks and next week I’ll go over putting the quilt top together with sashing and borders right here on this blog.

You may want to design a different layout for your heart blocks or follow Allison’s quilt tutorial from her site—Feel free to be creative! This is a casual sew along and a customizable project. The end goal is to have have fun sewing along with your Quilty virtual friends and have a finished project to gift, admire, or snuggle under by Valentine’s Day!

Maureen will be making her Heart Quilt from a mash up of Amy Sinabaldi’s MayFair and the new Foresta Fusion collection. Fusions are a group of ten prints from various Art Gallery Fabric designers that have been recolored and curated into the new color story. The two collections pair beautifully and have a romanic look for a heart quilt.

Quilt kits for the quilt Maureen will be stitching are available at Lady Belle Fabric.

The Heart Block is a fast block to piece and this quilt is a great way to show off your favorite prints! If you’re planning to make quilts like Maureen and mine, we’ve gone with a 30-block quilt and pulled 10 fat quarters. Background, backing, and binding requirements are listed in our free PDF download for the quilt layout in the illustration above.

I’ll be making my Heart quilt from a curated mix of fabrics from: Art Gallery Fabrics Ballerina Fusion (a recolored mix of AGF designer prints), my Spirited, Everlasting, Signature, and Maureen’s Enchanted Voyage and Mystical Land collections.

My non-traditional Valentine colors remind me of sugared gum drops and candy. I’m crazy over this color palette and went with my heart when I did my fabric pull.

Due to the short notice of our sew along there’s not a quilt kit or bundle that exactly matches my fabric pull. However, Fabric Stork has created two beautiful bundles of ten Art Gallery Prints that would make a gorgeous heart block quilt that has a similar color story. You’ll still need to get your background fabric, backing, and binding.
