Charming Cabin Quilt

There’s a new quilt pattern in my SHOP called Charming Cabin and it’s part of the Charming series of quilts you already love from my Free Projects page made from simple shapes and with a beginning quilter in mind! This pattern is a purchase pattern and it comes in three sizes: Runner, Throw, and Twin!

I designed this quilt for the upcoming Art Gallery Fabrics Bookish Look Book to show off my new Bookish fabric collection. I love how the prints show off in these big pieces and how fast and fun this quilt was to assemble. In fact, this quilt was so fun to make I didn’t even take block photos—I just got too excited to put it all together!

I did get fabric pull photos and this first group is the pull for the throw quilt.

So which came first, the idea for the quilt or for this photo of me reading a book on the quilt—hard for me to say but I love this library-vibe and it was the most comfortable photoshoot I’ve ever done!

Above is the throw quilt for this pattern that measures 58’’ x 76’’ which is a terrific snuggle size or reading in the park size! Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabric did the fantastic long arm quilting on my throw and we used two layers of Hobbs Tuscany Silk batting for the most decadent loft and drape.

I also made the Runner size in my Bookish prints. The runner measures 18’’ x 74’’ because I like a runner that has a nice drop off the edge of the table. Below is the Bookish fabric pull for the runner with AGF Spruce Pure Solid added as the sashing.

I do wish I’d sent this out to Brooke to long arm quilt as well because this really isn’t my best quilting job at all! But, when you’re rushing to get stuff done it doesn’t always make for great work. Lesson learned on my part! Regardless of my quilting, I love this runner and it is to be my fall-going-into-winter runner on my table.

Meet the Testers

With each new pattern release I have a team of super talented quilt testers that also make a version of the quilt. I’ve asked each tester of this quilt to come up with an inspiration image from Pinterest that captures the mood they wanted to create with their Charming Cabin make. How beautiful is this quilt in Art Gallery Fabrics Kismet!?!?! I could make quilts with this pattern all the live-long day making all these versions, and how about the photography spot—WOW!. I’m in love with this color palette Terri Neil selected for her Charming Cabin throw. Terri used a mix of Art Gallery Fabrics from Bari J., Amy Sinibaldi, AGF Studio, and Maureen Cracknell. Terri is also a professional long arm quilting and does the most beautiful hand-guided designs. Megan Eckroth made the dreamiest of runners in my favorite fall palette of terra cotta and olive. The garden-inspired Art Gallery Fabric prints from Bonnie Christine and Amy Sinibaldi were the perfect choice. I love the straight horizontal quilting that compliments the design and easy to do on a domestic machine (wish I’d thought of that)! Liza Taylor has such a cool, Western-Chic vibe to everything she makes! I knew she’d love this pattern and the opportunity to use lots of prints. Prickly Pear Quilt Show

I’m thrilled to bring you the newest quilt pattern in my Shop called Prickly Pear. This PDF pattern comes in three sizes: Crib, Double (full), and for the first time ever offered in one of my patterns, a king-size quilt!

I ended up making two quilt samples; a crib and a double. The crib size was made first while I was testing the pattern and waiting for the rest of my Lilliput collection to arrive. Let me introduce you to each of the quilts I stitched, then have you meet the quilt testers who also made versions of this pattern.

First up is the cover quilt for the pattern. It’s the smallest size, finishing at 50” square and really an oversized crib quilt. I was excited to mix prints from my Spirited and Kismet collections for this quilt as I’d not had a chance to combine the two collections before. They were meant to be together! That pop of solid red is Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids PE-456 Aurora Red.

This is a very traditional color palette but looks fresh and modern in this quilt.

I’ve been wanting to try rayon as a backing fabric for some time now and had this AGF Luna and Laurel rayon on hand which was the perfect look with this palette. Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabric did the long arm quilting on this quilt as I have to admit I was a little nervous about quilting with a rayon backing on my own. Brooke took a little extra time and slower speed but said it quilted beautifully and when asked, said she’d absolutely do it again—which I take as the best recommendation to use rayon as a backing again in the future!

For batting, I used Hobbs Tuscany Silk Blend batting and together with a rayon backing and Art Gallery Fabrics percale-like quilting cottons this quilt feels like a cloud and the drape is amazing!

This crib quilt is available as a kit from Lady Belle Fabrics and Brooke can even do the quilting for it as well. I used the Ginger Flower quilting design she offers and I love the playful floral and curly-q design.

The second quilt I made was in the double-size (or full) and I used Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids and prints from my new Lilliput collection.

I took cues from the pattern name for this color palette and my Lilliput collection has the most amazing green prints and beautiful blushing peach prints paired with Snow and Tender Green AGF Pure Solids—it was a match made in heaven!

I’d set up the guest bed for photographing the quilt and it still remains on that bed—I love it so much and it feels like summer time when I walk in that room—it’s prettier than my master bedroom!.

Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabric also did the long arm quilting on this quilt and we selected the design called Peek Bloom. I backed and bound the quilt in the same Lilliputain print from Lilliput for a whole cloth-look backing if the quilt were reversed.

Lady Belle Fabric also has kits for this double-size quilt in this coloring/fabrics. Be sure to act fast if you’re wanting either one of the kits as they sell out fast!

I used Hobbs Heirloom Premium 100% Bleached Cotton batting for this quilt and it’s the perfect drape and weight for a classic quilt feeling. I like to use a bleached cotton batting with a white background for the brightest white quilt.

Meet the Testers

For sometimes a couple months before a quilt pattern release I have quilt testers stitching behind the scenes making versions of the quilt and of course double checking everything in the pattern as is it should be. These testers are the most amazing ladies and so talented! I say this every quilt release but they’ve really out done themselves this time and three of them even made the king-size version of Prickly Pear!

If you remember with the last quilt release, South Paw, I had not only made the normal Meet the Tester collage that I do for my tester’s quilts but we added an additional feature of including pinned inspirational images we’d gathered from Pinterest. The testers and I use the inspiration images to help with the quilt color story and the vibe we want our quilt to have. You’d be amazed how this helps us all stay focused on the mood of the quilt and even helps when it comes to photography time. Above is the mood board for the full size Prickly Pear quilt I made and you can see the southwest desert influence in my color choices and images.

For my crib quilt I went a mix of Victorian-Boho-Free People, if that’s even a thing, I don’t know but am hoping the added inspiration images help to convey that energy I wanted to capture in this quilt.

Mary Gove is a delight and always a surprise to me when I see what she creates from my quilt patterns. Mary made this king-size Prickly Pear for herself and her color palette is inspiration in itself! She used all AGF Pure Solids in the most sophisticated and cool-girl color way—it’s sublime! Brittany has a great eye for mixing prints and chose Amy Sinibaldi’s new Velvet line from Art Gallery Fabrics together with AGF Wicked Sky Smooth Denim for a quilt that really shines. Joyce Ulm is a powerhouse quilter and fearless! This is another of the king-size Prickly Pear quilts made and is stunning. Not only did Joyce make the quilt but she made the entire bed ensemble complete with toss pillows from my pattern seen in the Fall 2020 issue of Quilts and More to the pillow shams. I love how working with my quilt testers I can start to see their personalities show through in their work and Marija Vujcic is a classic example of how knowing your style can translate through your work and create a signature look. Marija’s not intimidated by color and loves it pure and saturated. She used Katarina Roccella’s Aquarelle collection for Art Gallery Fabrics to create a crib-size quilt that looks picnic-ready for summertime. Her inspiration images bring the quilt full circle and makes me want to take a trip to Nantucket just to stay in that scene longer. Earlier this year Elizabeth Chappell of Quilter’s Candy Membership asked me if I’d like to design a quilt for the November Quilter’s Candy Membership and the answer to that was…YES! It took me several months to figure out just want I wanted to make as a quilt pattern and I wanted it to be something very special. The result is my Rose Window quilt pattern.

Quilter’s Candy Membership is a subscriber membership that opens a few times a year and features a new quilt or sewing pattern each month. Registration will open again in the new year so check the website HERE for more information.

Right now the Rose Window quilt pattern is exclusive to QCM but after 6 months I’ll be releasing it as a stand alone PDF pattern and it’ll be available in my shop. This post will just be eye-candy to show you the two sizes I made and to show off the work of my quilt testers with their beautiful Rose Window makes.

As I said, the pattern offers the quilt in two sizes. The oversize throw shown above and a crib/wall size quilt. The pattern is a mix of traditional patchwork and foundation paper-piecing. Don’t be frightened off by foundation paper-piecing, it’s easier than you think and I’ve created a video to go along with the pattern so you’ll have that available to you once the pattern is published this spring.

For the oversize throw I used prints from my new Art Gallery Fabrics Kismet collection and AGF Pure Solids. The backing is a print from my Art Gallery Fabrics Bountiful collection and it always amazes me how easy it is to mix and match between AGF collections!

The quilting on the throw was done by Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabric and we selected the Abstract Butterfly panto which has become one of my favorite quilt designs.

I went with Hobbs Heirloom !00% Cotton Batting inside and the quilt has a lovely, traditional drape and feel to it.

The crib/wall sample I wanted to make something with a holiday feel and selected various red and green prints from a mix of my AGF collections. For this quilt I added a few hand stitched lines of quilting and mostly machine quilted it all in a diagonal cross hatch pattern, using the points on the blocks as a guide. This quilt also has Hobbs Heirloom Cotton batting inside.

This is the perfect crib size or would also make a lovely wallhanging.

Meet the Testers

I was fortunate to work the the most incredible group of ladies this year and have them test my quilt patterns. About half the Rose Window pattern testers had never done foundation paper-piecing before and were surprised how much they enjoyed the experience! I think they did an amazing job!

There’s been a lot going on since my last post! Have you heard that my new Kismet fabric collection for Art Gallery Fabrics is now available in your favorite quilt shop? Yes!!! I normally would have shops listed on my FABRICS page with online shops carrying my newest collection but one, I’ve been too busy with projects to work on compiling the list and two, many shops sell out of their inventory of Kismet about as fast as they get it in so to keep it current is not doable at this time. The best thing is to check your local or favorite online shops first and then do an internet search for Kismet by Sharon Holland or Art Gallery Fabrics Kismet and see what pops up. Inventories change daily and more Kismet is coming soon so be patient and persistent. Once I have a bit more time I’ll start adding to my stock list Fabric page.

Rambler

There’s a new quilt in my SHOP and it’s called Rambler. I love that name for a quilt and I love this quilt. In fact I love it so much I made three versions! Prepare yourself for an epic blog post and virtual quilt show of Rambler quilts because there’s my quilts to show you and the quilt of six of my testers.

Rambler in Kismet fabrics by Sharon Holland

The first quilt to show is the one that started the whole Rambler parade. It’s made with my new Kismet fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics and has a wonderful retro 70’s look of a kitted afghan. This big boy is 72-1/2’’ x 86-1/2’’ and is available as a kit from Cottoneer (more on that, keep reading).

The pattern has a very fun technique for making, what I call, Blunt Flying Geese and has very little fabric waste compared to a Flippy Corner technique. The pattern even has coloring pages for you to play around with color variations and comes in two sizes: A full-size quilt and an 18-1/2’’ x 75-1/2’’ table runner.

Both my full size quilts have Hobbs Heirloom Cotton inside for a traditional drape and feel. Because of time crunch I ended up quilting all three of my Rambler makes (two full quilts and one runner). The big quilts are free motion leaves and stylized flower and it turned out pretty good! I like the dense, organic rambling roses effect.

On my Kismet Rambler I used the Fleuron Haven print from the Kismet collection and I’m crazy over this floral as a backing! Having a backing like this makes a quilt double-sided in my book.

I’m excited to be collaborating with Andrea Patton at Cottoneer to bring you kits of the Kismet Rambler. Cottoneer has a huge selection of your favorite fabrics as well as beautifully curated bundles—you’re going to love shopping for all your fabric needs at Cottoneer. While I was waiting for my Kismet fabric to arrive I was anxious to begin work on testing out this quilt pattern and making a sample quilt. I took a look at my fabric collections and curated a peach and spruce quilt I’m calling the Just Peachy Rambler. You know I love these soft peach tones and normally I tend toward peach and teals but the new spruce greens have me heading in a new direction!

For this quilt I selected prints from my Signature and Spirited lines with the addition of my prints found in Ballerina Fusions and Serenity Fusions. Throw in the beautiful new Northern Waters Pure Solid and some Smooth Denim for the binding and you have this soft, peach and spruce version of Rambler.

Don’t worry about trying to source all these fabrics on your own because Victoria Newmyer at Midlife Quilter will be carrying kits of my Just Peachy Rambler quilt. I know you’ll love Victoria’s shop and services!

I quilted this one exactly the same as I had the Kismet version and they feel like brother and sister quilts. I used the butterfly print from my Signature fabric line to back my quilt but you’ll be able to find many beautiful backing options at Victoria’s shop.

Victoria even has the sweetest “pretty things inside” muslin bags she sends the fabrics in and made special sized ones for the quilt kits!

Rambler Runner

The additional size option on the Rambler quilt pattern is instructions for a table runner. I personally love table runners because they’re a small project for time and materials, easy to quilt on your own (or even hand quilt), and it’s pretty much my only seasonal decorating change in my house so a fast decor item to your table!

For a festive holiday look that will take me through Valentine’s Day, I chose the Kismet Fleuron Sanctuary print in cranberry tones and Dashing Cinnamon (lines) print. You could easily make this runner in a weekend!

For quilting, I went with a very easy and simple diagonal crosshatch quilting and did it on my domestic sewing machine. I marked out lines with a friction pen and followed the lines of the blocks then went back in and quilted halfway between with more diagonal lines.

I used Kismet Mudcloth Berries both for the backing and the binding. I’m excited to put this into use and start pulling out a few Christmas items. I think I need to make some napkins in this print, too!

Rambler Quilt make by Tracey Taber-Perry

This gorgeous, serene Rambler quilt was made by pattern tester Tracey Taber-Perry @ttabes80 . Tracey is a new comer to quilting but does the nicest work you’d think she’s been quilting for years! She used Art Gallery Fabrics new Serenity Fusions line for her palette and I think this has a beach vibe with the soothing colors as well as a wintery look to it—so it’s perfect year round and would work in any decor!

Marija Vujcic is an amazing sewist and quilter and I recommend you follow her blog at Mara Quilt Designs. Marija pulled fabrics from her stash of assorted Art Gallery Fabrics to make a quilt for her son and made this bold blue beauty! She’ll be free motion quilting her top and I believe plans to back with Minky so you’ll want to check in with her to see the progress and finished quilt—it’s sure to be stunning!

Lindsey Fuessley as put a color wheel spin on the Rambler with a palette of muted orange-red, mustard yellow, sage greens, and denim blues. Another feature of Lindsey’s quilt is that her fabrics are mostly blenders or solids and has a very modern feel and graphic pop. Follow Lindsey on her Instagram account @lindseymakes —it’s a quilt feast for the eyes!

Joyce Ulm is a prolific quilter and has done it again with her Rambler make of complimentary blues and rusty orange all in Art Gallery Fabrics solids, blenders, and geometric prints. Jennifer Cannon has a keen eye for putting together great fabric combinations and her Rambler make is no exception! This mod pop of teal, mauve, black, and burgundy are pulled from a variety of AGF collections.
