Rambler Quilt by Sharon Holland

There’s been a lot going on since my last post! Have you heard that my new Kismet fabric collection for Art Gallery Fabrics is now available in your favorite quilt shop? Yes!!! I normally would have shops listed on my FABRICS page with online shops carrying my newest collection but one, I’ve been too busy with projects to work on compiling the list and two, many shops sell out of their inventory of Kismet about as fast as they get it in so to keep it current is not doable at this time. The best thing is to check your local or favorite online shops first and then do an internet search for Kismet by Sharon Holland or Art Gallery Fabrics Kismet and see what pops up. Inventories change daily and more Kismet is coming soon so be patient and persistent. Once I have a bit more time I’ll start adding to my stock list Fabric page.

Rambler

There’s a new quilt in my SHOP and it’s called Rambler. I love that name for a quilt and I love this quilt. In fact I love it so much I made three versions! Prepare yourself for an epic blog post and virtual quilt show of Rambler quilts because there’s my quilts to show you and the quilt of six of my testers.

The first quilt to show is the one that started the whole Rambler parade. It’s made with my new Kismet fabrics from Art Gallery Fabrics and has a wonderful retro 70’s look of a kitted afghan. This big boy is 72-1/2’’ x 86-1/2’’ and is available as a kit from Cottoneer (more on that, keep reading).

Rambler quilt in grass.jpg

The pattern has a very fun technique for making, what I call, Blunt Flying Geese and has very little fabric waste compared to a Flippy Corner technique. The pattern even has coloring pages for you to play around with color variations and comes in two sizes: A full-size quilt and an 18-1/2’’ x 75-1/2’’ table runner.

Rambler_Kismet_Outdoors-1sm.jpg

Both my full size quilts have Hobbs Heirloom Cotton inside for a traditional drape and feel. Because of time crunch I ended up quilting all three of my Rambler makes (two full quilts and one runner). The big quilts are free motion leaves and stylized flower and it turned out pretty good! I like the dense, organic rambling roses effect.

Kismet Fleuron Haven Backing.jpg

On my Kismet Rambler I used the Fleuron Haven print from the Kismet collection and I’m crazy over this floral as a backing! Having a backing like this makes a quilt double-sided in my book.

Rambler KIt Mood Board_JP-03.jpg

I’m excited to be collaborating with Andrea Patton at Cottoneer to bring you kits of the Kismet Rambler. Cottoneer has a huge selection of your favorite fabrics as well as beautifully curated bundles—you’re going to love shopping for all your fabric needs at Cottoneer. The Rambler quilt kit will have all the fabrics I used in my quilt and you can get that amazing floral for the backing while you’re there—how easy is that??!!

For any of the Rambler kits you’ll need to purchase the PDF pattern separately from my SHOP.

While I was waiting for my Kismet fabric to arrive I was anxious to begin work on testing out this quilt pattern and making a sample quilt. I took a look at my fabric collections and curated a peach and spruce quilt I’m calling the Just Peachy Rambler. You know I love these soft peach tones and normally I tend toward peach and teals but the new spruce greens have me heading in a new direction!

Rambler_Just Peachy_Outdoors-3.jpg

For this quilt I selected prints from my Signature and Spirited lines with the addition of my prints found in Ballerina Fusions and Serenity Fusions. Throw in the beautiful new Northern Waters Pure Solid and some Smooth Denim for the binding and you have this soft, peach and spruce version of Rambler.

Rambler_Just Peachy Blocks.jpeg

Don’t worry about trying to source all these fabrics on your own because Victoria Newmyer at Midlife Quilter will be carrying kits of my Just Peachy Rambler quilt. I know you’ll love Victoria’s shop and services!

Rambler Kit Mood Board_JP-02.jpg

I quilted this one exactly the same as I had the Kismet version and they feel like brother and sister quilts. I used the butterfly print from my Signature fabric line to back my quilt but you’ll be able to find many beautiful backing options at Victoria’s shop.

Victoria even has the sweetest “pretty things inside” muslin bags she sends the fabrics in and made special sized ones for the quilt kits!

Rambler Runner

The additional size option on the Rambler quilt pattern is instructions for a table runner. I personally love table runners because they’re a small project for time and materials, easy to quilt on your own (or even hand quilt), and it’s pretty much my only seasonal decorating change in my house so a fast decor item to your table!

Rambler Runner-5.jpg

For a festive holiday look that will take me through Valentine’s Day, I chose the Kismet Fleuron Sanctuary print in cranberry tones and Dashing Cinnamon (lines) print. You could easily make this runner in a weekend!

Rambler Runner-1.jpg

For quilting, I went with a very easy and simple diagonal crosshatch quilting and did it on my domestic sewing machine. I marked out lines with a friction pen and followed the lines of the blocks then went back in and quilted halfway between with more diagonal lines.

Rambler Runner-3.jpg

I used Kismet Mudcloth Berries both for the backing and the binding. I’m excited to put this into use and start pulling out a few Christmas items. I think I need to make some napkins in this print, too!

Meet the Testers

Now’s the part in my post where I introduce the fabulous testers that worked on this quilt pattern with their own selection of Art Gallery Fabrics. It’s amazing to see how this quilt changes depending upon fabric selection, prints, colors, and placement. To see more of their work, be sure to follow them on the provided links.

Rambler Quilt make by Tracey Taber-Perry

Rambler Quilt make by Tracey Taber-Perry

This gorgeous, serene Rambler quilt was made by pattern tester Tracey Taber-Perry @ttabes80 . Tracey is a new comer to quilting but does the nicest work you’d think she’s been quilting for years! She used Art Gallery Fabrics new Serenity Fusions line for her palette and I think this has a beach vibe with the soothing colors as well as a wintery look to it—so it’s perfect year round and would work in any decor!

Rambler quilt make by Marija Vujcic

Rambler quilt make by Marija Vujcic

Marija Vujcic is an amazing sewist and quilter and I recommend you follow her blog at Mara Quilt Designs. Marija pulled fabrics from her stash of assorted Art Gallery Fabrics to make a quilt for her son and made this bold blue beauty! She’ll be free motion quilting her top and I believe plans to back with Minky so you’ll want to check in with her to see the progress and finished quilt—it’s sure to be stunning!

Rambler quilt make by Lindsey Fuessley

Lindsey Fuessley as put a color wheel spin on the Rambler with a palette of muted orange-red, mustard yellow, sage greens, and denim blues. Another feature of Lindsey’s quilt is that her fabrics are mostly blenders or solids and has a very modern feel and graphic pop. Follow Lindsey on her Instagram account @lindseymakes —it’s a quilt feast for the eyes!

Rambler quilt make by Joyce Ulm

Joyce Ulm is a prolific quilter and has done it again with her Rambler make of complimentary blues and rusty orange all in Art Gallery Fabrics solids, blenders, and geometric prints. This would make a great quilt for a guy on your gift list! I know Joyce already has this quilted since this picture collage was made so check out her IG account to see the full reveal. You’ll also love her Etsy shop filled with your favorite fabrics and fabulous bundles.

Last, but not least is Christine Trotta’s Rambler quilt make. Christine has collaborated with Victoria Newmyer of Midlife Quilter to curate an Art Gallery Fabrics bundle for the Trellis Rambler version. Burgundy, cream, denim blue, and latte make this palette timeless. The fun mix of lattice geometrics, denim, and florals have a fresh air look to this lovely quilt. Trapeze Quilt

Trapeze Quilt

Trapeze Quilt styled-1.jpg

Pattern Release

There’s a new quilt pattern in my SHOP and it’s called Trapeze! The name may not imply it but this quilt design was inspired by the geometric patterns found on wool blankets.

Trapeze Quilt Fabric Pull.jpeg

The Fabrics

In keeping with wool blankets, I purposely kept the number of prints/fabric controlled and instead of every block being different I went with an every block being the same to create an overall pattern.

I chose a completely different color palette then I normally work in and selected Art Gallery Fabrics Denim Blue Pure Solid for the background and prints by Maureen Cracknell’s Soulful and Garden Dreamer collections mixed with my own prints from Spirited and Signature to create the Trapeze - Sky palette.

Trapeze Quilt Pieces.jpeg

The Block

Trapeze Quilt Flying Geese.jpeg

The Trapeze quilt pattern is labeled as an Intermediate skill level because there’s a lot of moving parts and some squaring up and trimming involved—but don’t let that intimidate you. All the steps are broken down into manageable sections with fully illustrated instructions. I’ve also created a helpful tutorial on this blog and included the link in the pattern for how to square up half-square triangle and Flying Geese units if you don’t have specialty rulers like these Bloc_Loc rulers.

Trapeze Quilt Block.jpeg

The large quilt block is beautiful on it’s own and would make a great toss pillow but the real magic happens when the blocks are combined and make the overall quilt pattern.

Trapeze Quilt Block 2.jpeg

The Quilt

Trapeze Quilt Quilting 3.jpeg

The pattern comes in two sizes: 75-1/2” x 87-1/2” which is labeled as a Twin/Full size but I’ve put this on my queen-size bed with the length running the width of the bed and it covers a queen nicely! The other size is a large crib or throw size at 51-1/2” x 56-1/2”. You’ll see examples of the crib-size in the Meet the Testers showcase further in this post—keep reading.

Trapeze Quilt styled bed.jpg

Kinda nice to actually see a quilt on a bed, right? I’ve not got one of those super thick mattresses so that also gives me more drape over the sides of a queen bed. This will also give you an idea of scale of the block design.

I love how this looks on my bed but I can’t keep it because it’s a wedding gift to my oldest son who just got married on October 13th! My new daughter-in-law loves the color blue and my son’s always loved the look of woodsy wool blankets so it’s a perfect marriage of their styles.

trapeze quilt sq.jpg

And, here’s the full view of the quilt and how much fun this repeating pattern is! The secondary geometric designs created is the reason why I call this pattern Trapeze. The diamond rings look like they’re floating on the background and the name fit the airy feeling of space between the geometric shapes.

Brooke at Lady Belle Fabric has Trapeze quilt kits available for the same Trapeze - Sky palette and fabrics used in my blue and cheddar quilt. Order early because these kits always go fast!

IMG_9028Trapeze Sky_.jpg

The beautiful quilting was stitched by Brooke Becker of Lady Belle Fabric and I used my favorite Hobbs Tuscany Silk Batting inside.

Meet the Testers

I’m so lucky to have talented quilt testers to work with. These ladies give their all to create gorgeous quilts from my patterns and give valuable feedback so you can have the best quilting experience when working with one of my patterns.

All my testers use Art Gallery Fabric in their quilts and decide on their own fabric pulls and color palettes. There were nine testers for this quilt because it was so popular with my pattern testing group and the results are astonishing. Most stitched the small version of this quilt but you’ll notice 1/3 of the quilts are the large size like my own. You’ll also notice many of the testers finished their quilts using the Chenille-It binding method as shown on my video tutorial.

The following collages are just a peek into the incredible quilts made by these ladies. You’ll want to use the links provided in their captions to learn more about each maker and their quilt makes.

Brittany Tunison

Meet Brittany Tunison pattern tester for Trapeze quilt

This is Brittany Tunison’s second test quilt for me and she once again wows us with her fabric selection and color play. Brittany has used prints from several AGF collections that include prints by Maureen Cracknell, Amy Sinibaldi, and myself (Sharon Holland). I love her style and you can read more about Brittany’s own work as a quilt pattern designer and for more about her Trapeze quilt make on her brand new blog White Plains Quilts and you can read more about her tester quilt HERE. You can also find Brittany on Instagram @brittanytunison

Christine Trotta

Meet Christine Trotta pattern tester for Trapeze quilt

Christine Trotta has also pattern tested for me before and I love her enthusiasm for everything quilting and sewing. She’s an amazing addition to my tester group and so supportive of all the makers. Christine’s all ready for the holidays with this Trapeze version made with prints from Maureen Cracknell’s new Cozy and Joyful collection for Art Gallery Fabrics. Her addition of Chenille-It binding on the edges instead of traditional binding is the icing on the cake! Follow Christine’s Instagram account @serendipityinlovecreations and for even more fun, stop by her blog HERE.

Elaine Satterfield

Meet Elaine Satterfield patter

This is the first time I’ve gotten to work with Elaine Satterfield for testing one of my patterns and let me tell you, she’s incredible! I’m in love with her AGF Terra Kotta fabric pull and these colors! Such a beauty of a quilt and made in the small crib/throw-size quilt. Perfect look for fall. Elaine lives in northern California wine country and dreams to longarm and quilt for others someday and maybe even have a little fabric shop. You can follow Elaine’s quilt adventures on Instagram @elaines14

Eleri Kerian

Tester Template 2Eleri Kerian.jpg

When Eleri Kerian signed up to test Trapeze for me she couldn’t decide which palette to use because at that time she didn’t know if she was having a girl or a boy—so she made two quilts! Both her makes are the crib/throw-size but one is more decidedly a boy quilt and the other more suited as a girl quilt. Both quilts use an assortment of AGF collection fabrics. Both are finished with Chenille-It binding, and both quilts are spectacular! Which is your favorite? Follow Eleri on Instagram @elerihandmade for daily inspiration and quilting goodness along with the answer if it’s a boy or a girl!

Joyce Ulm

Tester Template 2Joyce Ulm.jpg

This is Joyce Ulm’s third test quilt for me and another stunning example of this talented lady’s work. She made this crib/throw Trapeze quilt for her new granddaughter and I love that she selected AGF fabrics in non-traditional colors for a quilt to grow into! Just look at that quilting that Joyce does herself. Here’s another example of Chenille-It binding finish that’s sublime. See more of Joyce’s work on Instagram @evamaecustomquilts, Etsy shop, and on her Facebook blog HERE.

Marija Vujcic

Tester Template 2Marija V.jpg

Another all-star pattern tester is Marija Vujcic. Marija has so much sewing experience and is so kind to share it with the testing group, on her Instagram @mvquilts, and on her blog Mara Quilt Designs. Marija made the full-size Trapeze quilt and I’m obsessed with it! She used my AGF Spirited prints with AGF Pure Solids for a bold and beautiful quilt. The gorgeous quilting was all free-motion quilted my Marija and you can see her process by following her Instagram and blog pages.

Mary Gove

Tester Template 2Mary Gove.jpg

There’s just something about Mary Gove and her fresh, modern take to quilts that is so exciting! Believe it or not, Mary is very new to quilting and tackled the full-size version of Trapeze in this scrumptious palette of AGF Terracotta Tile Pure Solids and AGF Terra Kotta collection prints. She just got her top back from being long arm quilted and didn’t get it bound and photographed in time for this post so be sure to follow her progress and stunning photos on her Instagram account @thecurlyquilter. There’s more amazing things to come from this quilter—I just know it!

Sara Marie Gardner

Tester Template 2Sara Marie.jpg

It’s with great pleasure that I had a chance to work with Sara Marie Gardner on a test quilt. A nicer person you just couldn’t meet and her beautiful quilt reflects her beautiful style. Sara Marie chose AGF Trouvaille collection and it’s a show-stopper! Here’s another new comer to the world of quilting and she’s taking the world by storm with her stunning work. See what I mean when you visit her Instagram account @sewlucille and her blog at Sew Lucille Handmade and Etsy shop by the same name, HERE.

Terri Neil

Tester Template 2Terri Neil.jpg

It’s a real treat to work with quilters like Terri Neil. Terri recently returned to quilting full time and surprised herself with purchasing a long arm machine then surprised herself again and started a long arm business called Quilting Rubies. Terri quilted her Trapeze quilt made in adorable AGF Pacha prints, Pure Solids, and blenders. The stunning black Chenille-It edging is the perfect finish to this baby quilt. Follow Terri on Instagram @quiltingrubies and you’ll be in awe of all the beautiful quilts she makes and quilts for others.

Trapeze Quilt full.jpg

Are you inspired? I sure am and have plans to make this quilt again with my new fabric collection, Kismet coming any day now to shops. Brooke Becker at Lady Belle Fabric will have Trapeze - Kismet kits available once she has the fabrics in stock. So be watching for that and I’ll also make sure to post about Kismet and quilt kits on this blog and my Instagram account @sharonhollanddesigns.

I can’t wait to see your Trapeze quilt makes popping up on social. If you’re on Instagram and use my fabrics or make something from my patterns, be sure to tag me @sharonhollanddesigns so I see your lovely creations!

Happy sewing,

Sharon

Recent #SweetHomeQAL posts in the Instagram hashtag pool

Is your Instagram post featured in this #SweetHomeQAL hashtag pool snapshot for this week???

We’re using Instagram as a Sweet Home QAL community share spot where we can follow along and comment on each others quilt progress and share beautiful photos of our work.

Every time you share a post to your public instagram account and use the official #SweetHomeQAL hashtag in your post caption your post is automatically entered into the giveaway hashtag pool! That’s right—it’s as easy as that—just do what you’d do anyway! So, to up your chances, post a lot of of progress shots of your fabric pull, cut pieces, blocks, sashing, assembly, tops, and ultimately, finished quilts.

You may notice I keep saying you need a public Instagram account to be entered into the giveaway drawings. That’s because if you have your IG account set as a private account, Instagram does not add any hashtags to hashtag pools from private accounts—it’s just the way they roll. So, you may want to go into your IG settings and turn your account to public for the QAL or if not, and I totally get the need for privacy in this strange world we live in, just know that you won’t be eligible for the giveaways.
